Brief History of Ho Teaching Hospital

1998

Construction Begins

Construction of the facility, then known as the Volta Regional Hospital, commenced with funding from the British Government.

2000

Commissioning

The hospital was commissioned in December 2000 and began its operations, quickly establishing itself as a key healthcare provider.

2019

Teaching Hospital Status

Designated as a Teaching Hospital in April 2019 by the Ministry of Health, enhancing its role in medical education and research.

The Governing Board

Alexandra Sterling

Background

Dr. Dovlo is a distinguished public health physician with over 40 years of experience in Ghana and internationally. He is the former Chairman of the Faculty of Public Health at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and previously served as Director of Health Systems & Services at the WHO Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO). He has also held key international roles, including WHO Representative in Rwanda and Health Systems Adviser at WHO Headquarters. Prior to his work with WHO, he served as Director for Human Resources Development at Ghana’s Ministry of Health. Dr. Dovlo is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He holds an honorary Doctorate from the University of Health and Allied Sciences.

Dr. Fred Bedzrah operates at the rare intersection of healthcare, technology, and public policy. With 15 years of progressive leadership experience, he has built a reputation for turning complex, large-scale visions into reality. Currently serving as Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical Services) at the National Identification Authority, he oversees Ghana’s digital transformation and biometric identity infrastructure. But his impact doesn't stop at digital ID. Dr. Bedzrah leverages his diverse background—which spans clinical medicine, public health, agriculture, and sustainability—to drive innovative public-private partnerships. He is a unique kind of executive: part health systems expert, part digital identity innovator, and wholly dedicated to community-driven development.

A seasoned pharmacist with 33 years of public service, including 20 years as a Hospital and District Pharmacist and service as Regional Pharmacist and Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services. Retired as Chief Pharmacist at the Volta Regional Health Directorate after 13 years in the role. Currently serves as CEO of Verdi Pharmacy, overseeing branches in Aflao, Ho, Hohoe, and Kpando, with a workforce of over 85 staff. Also superintends two Pharmacy Council-accredited MCA training schools, which have trained more than 800 dispensers across the region. Has served as a board member of Keta Business College, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Keta Nursing and Midwifery College, and the Global Evangelical Church.

Courage A.Y.F. Kwame-Kumah is a respected nursing leader, pediatric specialist, and passionate advocate for Ghana’s healthcare system. With over 15 years of hands-on clinical experience, Courage combines deep medical expertise with a big-picture view of how to make hospitals work better for both patients and staff. His work focuses heavily on pediatric care, particularly for children with special needs and those facing haema-oncology challenges. As the Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, he fights for workforce development and better clinical standards. He also loves to teach, serving as part-time faculty at the University of Health and Allied Sciences and Hohoe Nursing and Midwifery School. At his core, Courage is a team builder who believes in the power of evidence-based practice and interprofessional collaboration. Today, he continues to be a guiding force at Ho Teaching Hospital, ensuring it remains a place of true medical excellence and compassionate care.

Backed by a decade of strategic leadership on various boards, she has continuously broken barriers in healthcare and academia—culminating in her recent, historic appointment as the first nurse to serve as a Vice-Chancellor in West Africa.
